Thursday, March 3 – Robe

We had a relaxed day with a great walk along the ocean front. We are right in amongst the Aussies, mainly of our generation, but also younger, enjoying their leisure time. There is walking, sailing, fishing, jet skiing, swimming, lawn bowling; as well as tennis courts, squash courts, a football field, netball, a golf course, and a skate park….oh, and surfing!

The town seems peaceful and quiet, but underneath its calm façade people are living out their lives with much noise (just pass a café, or a pub and hear the hubbub), and activity. Did I mention the birds before? Well, they chatter all the time too! It is as if they are nattering to you as you walk along, or they sing you a beautiful song, or cackle amongst themselves. And then of course there are the kookaburras that sound like they are echoing human laughter!

We did our laundry, and updated our financial stuff….using our credit card so much it is really important to keep on top of all the charges; for example, Ray discovered that one of the hotels had taken the charge twice!  A car rental company also appears to have charged us twice. In addition, car rental companies take a deposit, which ties up the deposit funds thus reducing your credit limit, so, we have to make sure that they “cancel” the deposit when the car is returned in the same condition as when we got it!

And I of course, worked on updating my blog. None of these things were accomplished without considerable frustration with poor quality WiFi. I think the Internet connections seem OK but the hotel systems are not appropriate for the size of the operation. Those of you who knew Mountain Springs in the past know what that means!!

Now it is evening and we will continue on our way tomorrow. Internet is working fine now....that's funny....why at night and not in the mornings or during the day? I would have thought it would have been consistent.

We are going to enjoy some fresh salmon in our apartment and then head off to sleep to be ready for the morrow.

PS - If you have any questions you'd like to ask, or things you would like me to add....just let me know. I know sometimes it might seem boring to the reader, but this blog is also serving as our "memory" of the trip!! We cover so much ground we don't always remember stuff when we get back to Canada, and this helps.

I was wondering if you ran across any reference to Sir John Franklin when you were in Tasmania. He was the governor of Tasmania for a couple of years, around 1840 as I recall. The people liked him, but the colonial powers (the civil servants who got rich from assigning convicts to pet projects) didn't. They made him out to be an idiot and had him recalled to England. They did the same to his successor. They were also upset that his wife, Lady Jane Franklin, seemed at times to be running the show. Lady Jane was far ahead of her time. She had a mind of her own and wasn't afraid to express it. After Sir John Franklin disappeared, she bullied the Royal Navy into sending out search party after search party and lobbied the American Government to do the same. She also raised funds for and sent out her own expeditions. After she found out that Sir John had died before the ships were abandoned, she spent a lot of time travelling the far reaches of the world, which was very unusual for a Victorian woman. I think you would have liked her, Elizabeth.
