Battle Harbour, Labrador

Up early and to breakfast for 8 a.m. Then out to wander over the island. Watched some whales in the distance; spotted an iceberg; were mesmerized by 2 ravens in the cliffs; saw the wreck of a plane that crashed on top of the island in the 1980s; and just sat and feasted our eyes on the marvelous views.

Robert Peary was in Battle Harbour when he transmitted his famous message “the Pole is ours!”. Dr. Wilfred Grenfell built his first hospital in Labrador here in 1893.

After lunch of a delicious bowl of beans and broth and vegetables and plenty of hot freshly baked bread, we went on a “walking tour” of the village buildings with Mike Earle, the Site Manager. He is quite fun! He was born in Newfoundland, one of 16 kids, lived in Corner Brook and became a fisherman for 10 years (he is now 41); then he joined the predecessor of the Battle Harbour Historic Trust firstly as a director and secretary of the board, then as a “heritage” carpenter. He now works in Battle Harbour during the summer months and on various cruise ships in the winter months. He is a true story teller with a nice smile and a glint in the eye. You could listen to him day long.

In the late afternoon the weather turned quite cold – in fact so cold that you see Lucky (Mike’s little dog) ‘s breath in the air. Fortunately, I had my thermal with me and so was able to keep snugly and warm! Dinner was a delicious meal of fresh salmon. Unfortunately no singing tonight; however, we did meet a couple from Rhode Island and spent some time in the evening chatting with them.

I was on the vessel in your picture, the Schooner Bowdoin. I was wondering I you remembered meeting us?
