Kastoria, Greece

Tuesday June 5

The morning started early with a wake up walk around the little village. Ray and I took Leon, the fluffy, white, Samoa with us. Of course he didn’t understand any of our requests, but simply cocked his head and looked at us then ran off in the opposite direction. None the less he stuck with us, and after saying “hi” to his buddies, secured behind their owners’ fences, he seemed content to return with us to the villa. We had a few moments of laughter: two of the girls couldn't open their bedroom door; so Peter and Vladimir to the rescue with the ladder from the cherry tree!! these master detectives had them free in moments!!!

After breakfast we rattled along the tiny roads in our private transport towards the border with Greece and an efficient, quick transfer. This southern part of Macedonia has been a treat. Beautiful mountains, villages of stone houses, and sunny faced roses, and warm and welcoming villagers.

We arrived in Kastoria, Greece around 12:30. There is an hour’s difference between here and Macedonia making it 9 hours different from Vancouver. The hotel is beautiful and our room faces over the lake. We took a walk along the front to a restaurant and had a quick meal; then went to the supermarket to get some snacks for the Mt Olympus hike on Thursday.

Ray’s foot has really been bothering him and not responding to his meds….so, it was decided a trip to the hospital was in order. As Peter has to go with him to make a report to Intrepid, I am hoping they do not have too long to wait. Had it been a Canadian hospital, I have no doubt they would be there a few hours. They left the hotel about 4:35 ….so let’s see when they get back! Well, can you believe it!! They are back, just as I typed this. Less than an hour...about 45 minutes! That included the cab ride and a visit to the chemist, and yes….it is definitely gout!! The cost, including the cab, less than 15 Eur.

We went for a walk into the town and bought a Wind SIM for 11 EUR which should last the remaining days in Greece. Then we went to Gramophone for dinner. It was neat, a little more expensive than Macedonia, and served tapas-like dishes – so small dishes of Greek salad, grilled mushrooms, cheese plate, and chicken. Quite delicious.

Around 9 we strolled back to the hotel watching the sun setting and are now tucked up for a good night’s sleep. Kastoria is beautiful, and quite sleepy....at our end of town anyway!
