Friday February 12, 2016 - Dad's Birthday

We celebrated Dad's birthday today. Jim drove us to the ferry and the four of us took one ferry into the centre of Sydney, then another ferry over to Watson's Bay, one of the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Suzie booked "Doyle's" for lunch but first we took a walk around Watsons Bay. It was really lovely; pretty narrow streets, and older looking quaint homes filled with character. We walked around a rocky point to Camp Cove Beach, saw the ruins of the WWII harbour defences, and read about one of 3 Japanese midget submarines that got caught in the anti-submarine boom net and couldn't get itself free so the sailors in the submarine blew it up killing themselves and destroying the submarine - the other two got away!

After the walk we went to the Beach Pub and had a couple of beers. It was hot – over 80F - and sunny, so the beer slid down very easily! Then we took three steps along the front and arrived at Doyle's in time for our lunch booking.
Doyle's is an old established (started in 1885) and well known and loved fish restaurant in Sydney. The entree's were beautifully presented and I enjoyed the creativity and colour of the scallops, calimari and prawns.....and  Dad enjoyed the taste!! Our main course too was delicious and beautifully cooked. Then around 3:30 we headed to the wharf and caught the ferry back to Circular Quay, then a second ferry to Balmain, where we got off and walked across the park to The Dry Dock where we were meeting Ted and Barb, Jim and Sue's friends. Remember we had met them before at the pub the same day we got soaked sightseeing in Sydney! We had a “birthday” drink with them and then got the ferry back to Woolwich and home around 7:15. We were all fairly exhausted, so just relaxed, had a cup of tea and a snack, and are now relaxing before heading off to bed. So, I think Dad had a good time....but he will tell you.
